What an AI agent development company actually does

Hiring an AI agent development company is a strange purchase, because the thing you are buying does not exist yet and the demos all look the same. Everyone shows you a chat window doing something clever. Almost nobody shows you the boring middle: the retries, the permissions, the day the source system changes its export format.

This is what the work actually involves, and how to tell the difference between a build and a demo before you sign anything.

What an AI agent development company builds, and what it is not

An agent is not software you operate. That distinction is the whole proposition.

For twenty years, buying software meant buying an application and then doing the work inside it. You still wrote the report. You still checked the dashboard. An agent inverts that: you describe the work once, and it executes, repeatedly, while you do something that needs a person.

So the deliverable is not a tool with a login. It is a running workflow that takes a task off someone's desk and hands back a result.

What an AI agent development company should ask before quoting

The questions are the tell. A team that quotes before asking these is selling you a demo.

Which task, precisely. Not "automate onboarding" the specific sequence, with its triggers and its exceptions.

What does good look like. Written as a paragraph a new starter could follow. If nobody can write it, the agent cannot be built to match it, and no amount of model choice fixes that.

Where the data lives, and who may see it. Permissions are inherited, not granted. An agent reaching your documents can see what the account it runs as can see, which is why a permissions review belongs before the build rather than after it.

What must never happen. The guardrail matters more than the capability. Define what it may never do and it can act confidently everywhere else.

Who owns it afterwards. The answer to this determines whether you have an asset or a dependency.

What an AI agent development company should hand over

Three things, and the third is the one people forget to ask for.

The workflow itself, running on infrastructure you can access. Our own builds run on self-hosted n8n, with data and auth on Supabase, specifically so the client keeps the workflows, the data and the keys. Nothing important sits inside a vendor's account.

A readable log. Every action recorded, bounded, and inspectable by someone who was not there. The log is what makes autonomy safe to grant, and it is the first thing an insurer or a client will ask to see.

The ability to change it. If a rate change or a new document type means raising a ticket with the supplier, you have bought a dependency. The handover should include the training to run and extend the thing without the people who built it.

What an AI agent development company will not do for you

Say this plainly or the project disappoints.

It will not fix a process nobody has written down. Automating an undocumented workflow produces faster inconsistency, and the discovery work usually reveals that two people were doing the same job differently for years.

It will not clean your data. An agent pointed at a supplier list holding four spellings of the same company produces reconciliations nobody trusts.

It will not remove the need for oversight. Drafting gets faster, checking gets slower, because you are now checking for a new class of error rather than the familiar human ones.

And it will not deliver value from a task nobody minded doing. The wins come from the work people actively avoid — the chasing, the retrieval, the reconciliation.

How long an AI agent development company should take

Weeks, not quarters, for a first agent that does one job properly.

Our own commitment is under six weeks from scope to live, and that is possible only because the scope is deliberately narrow. The failure mode is the opposite: a twelve-month programme to build a platform, which arrives after the business has changed its mind about what it needed.

Start with one task nobody defends. It carries no political cost when it works, and it gives you a real log to point at when you widen.

Where to start with an AI agent development company

Pick the task, write the paragraph, check who can see the data. That is a morning's work and it is more preparation than most firms arrive with.

What you should own rather than rent is worth settling before the first build, and that is covered in build or buy AI agents. For the oversight structure that keeps an agent safe once it is running, the detail sits in AI agent governance.

The four agents AI Institute has built and shipped, including the course lifecycle automation and the eTenders work, are described on the AI agents page, alongside how scoping and delivery actually run in how we work.
